BREAST CANCER 1, EARLY ONSET

Breast cancer 1, early onset
Locus: NM_007297
Definition: Homo sapiens breast cancer 1, early onset (BRCA1), transcript
variant BRCA1-delta2-10, mRNA.

Significance
BRCA1 is tumor suppressor gene located on chromosome 17. Carriers of BRCA1 gene mutations have an increased risk of breast and ovarian cancer.

Commercial uses
-Genetic test to identify presence of BRCA1 gene mutations associated with breast and ovarian cancer susceptability
Test providers:
Myriad
Myriad is now marketing the test, which costs $3,120, to the general public through print and television advertising (Pollack, “A Genetic Test That Very Few Need, Marketed to the Masses,” The New York Times, Feb. 11, 2007 (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/09/11/business/media/11genetics.html?_r=2&oref=slogin&oref=slogin)

Licensing
The BRCA1 patents, US 5,747,282 and 5,710,001, provide Myriad with exclusive rights in the United States to commercial laboratory testing services and diagnostics kits that utilize the BRCA1 gene sequences.
