Human DNA in Commerce: a Wiki collaboration project
A. Goal
1) Create an inclusive guide to the gene in commerce
- How much of the genome is licensed?
- How much of the genome is being used commercially?
- How much of the genome is being use for commercial medical purposes (diagnostic, therapeutic)?
2) Provide database of all commercial uses of genes
3) Provide database of gene patent license terms
4) Provide database for legal and social issues related to gene ownership
5) Provide moderated forum for gene ownership issues
B. Organization
1) Every gene will have its own "page" which can be accessed by searching the database (e.g., search EGF and then select "EGF Gene" from search results, which will retrieve the "gene page")
2) FISH probes
3) The information will be entered in a format that allows the WikiGene managers to extract information automatically and perform calculations on the data
- License information will be entered into a table
- Information from the table can be extracted into a database and manipulated by WikiGene managers
C. Every gene page will have the following information:
1) Patent listing
2) Licensed uses
a) Gene patent licenses
- Information will include 1) license status; and 2) complete license, if available (information is added into a table by Managers, Editors, or Registered Users
3) Commercial uses
a) Commercial research use
- Commodity sale (e.g., OriGene and other commercial sources) [how much of the genome is for sale?]
- Gene chips which contain probes for the gene
b) Commercial clinical use (e.g., HER2/neu for breast cancer)
- Diagnostic tests
- Gene tests associated with drug efficacy
4) Legal issues
a) Patent infringement suits
b) Other legal cases involving the gene (such as the Canavan gene case in which patients sued scientist who clone gened for breach of fiduciary duty for using patient tissues without authorization)
5) Social issues
6) Blog discussion board
a) Blog discussion board will enable users to interact, discuss, and exchange information
- Each gene will have its own Blog forum
- Home page will have a Blog forum on general gene ELSI topics
D. How it will work
1) Invited membership
- AUTM (Association of University Technology Managers)
- LESI (Licensing Executives Society)
- Legal Counsel and Business Development Executives in Biotech industry
- BIO members
- Academic members (law, business, and science)
- Registered Patent Attorneys and Agents
2) All Registered Members (with password) invited to submit information
a) Members can directly add information to Wikigene page [?]
b) Members can transmit information which Wikigene managers will add to Wikigene page
c) Members can become “associate editors” and “editors” with primary responsibility for the content of a Wikigene gene page or cluster of gene pages
3) Other methods to capture information
a) Execute Google search and save results in each Wikigene Page for later editing by editors or associate editors
- Search: gene name + patent + license
4) Aggregator/search engine to capture information
E. Information availability
- Information is free
F. Sustainability
- Advertising
